The Hobbit tops box office worldwide

Martin Freeman plays his role as Bilbo Baggins convincingly

As of late February The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey had grossed a total of $960,001,896 worldwide. The movie has made more money worldwide than either of the Lord of the Rings films. Just in it's opening weekend it is estimated to of made almost 230 million dollars. The movie had the fifth highest domestic grossing of 2012, just below Skyfall and the Hunger games and making more than the last part of the Twilight Saga and Dr. Seuss' The Lorax. The first showings of the movie beginning at midnight had hundreds of fans waiting in line to be among the first people to see it. Many critics rated the movie highly and with the Hollywood Reporter quoting "Jackson and his colleagues have created a purist's delight" it became a well recommended movie and began to soar past the amount of money any of the Lord of the Rings films made. The Hobbit did receive some poor reviews before it was released but it was unaffected by them as it kept earning money and made its way up the box office charts.
